London takes action: – Students are no longer allowed to bring family

Date:

Foreign master’s students in Great Britain will no longer be allowed to bring their family members to the country in the future. Corresponding visas will no longer be issued from 1 January 2024, the government in London announced on Tuesday. The measure aims to reduce the number of legal immigrants. Despite Brexit and against the wishes of the government in London, this had continued to rise in recent years.

Although immigrants from the EU are now of little importance, the number of immigrants from non-EU countries has risen sharply. Students and their families play a major role in this.

Last year, 136,000 visas were issued for student members
According to the government, 136,000 student-partner or child visas were issued in 2022 alone, more than eight times the number in 2019, when 16,000 people were allowed to enter the UK this way.

London wants to drastically reduce immigration figures
According to the government in London, it is “the largest restrictive measure ever implemented by any government”. “This package strikes the right balance between taking bold action to reduce immigration and protecting the economic benefits students can bring to the UK,” Home Secretary Suella Braverman told parliament on Tuesday. In the medium term, this will lead to a drop in immigration numbers to pre-pandemic levels, the minister said.

Under the new regulation, only graduate students participating in a research program are entitled to bring family members. Foreign students should no longer be given the opportunity to work before they have completed their studies.
