“Sometimes you can’t stand outside for 20 seconds”: the continuous rain has caused a true mosquito invasion. Biological pesticides are deployed on the march with “ground forces” and also by helicopter. A new threat is now emerging: the tiger mosquito as a dangerous disease spreader.
They easily survive drought and frost in the soil. And it can take several years for new life to awaken in mosquito eggs, all it takes is prolonged contact with water. After the rainy, cool April, rising temperatures have now led to mass hatching – delayed, but all the more intense. And especially in flooded floodplains, the constantly warm and humid microclimate there was ideal for large-scale breeding grounds for the pesky bloodsuckers.
