Thunderstorm in Burgenland instead of the sun in Seville: “Carmen”, the premiere of the opera this year in the quarry St. Margarethen, had to be canceled on Wednesday evening due to a storm.
Wednesday evening, at the start of the opera in the quarry St. Margarethen, the unbelievable happened: “Carmen” survived. The reason why the eponymous heroine is not stabbed to death by her disappointed lover Don José, as is customary in Georges Bizet’s opera, was not the director’s idea, but a whim of the weather gods.
Opera canceled during intermission
The opera had started in the most beautiful sunshine, but in the intermission after the second act it turned again. Suddenly it started pouring and it wouldn’t stop. After the storm had raged unopposed for half an hour, Artistic director Daniel Serafin was forced to end the opera, which was broadcast with a delay on ORF III, before the evening of the premiere.
Although many guests fled the official demolition, the last few hurried to the car after the demolition to get to safety from the storm. So the premiere literally fell into the water.
Even during the dress rehearsal, the weather was not ideal
“Carmen” doesn’t seem to be under a lucky star. It was already raining during the second act during the dress rehearsal on Monday evening. In order not to get wet, some visitors left the opera early that evening. However, the performers continued their performance unhindered. After a few minutes the rain subsided and the dress rehearsal could continue as planned.
