Strong storms caused severe aftermath in some parts of Lower Austria. The consequences ranged from numerous floods to massive crop failures. For example, the emergency services had a particularly difficult time due to the heavy rainfall in the Bruck an der Leitha district. In Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge alone, the massive thunderstorm cell caused 14 stakes. “Cellars, but also residential buildings were full of rainwater,” reports a comrade. The fire brigade was here for hours pumping out work.
In Gallbrunn, too, the Florianis had to move to flooded streets. In Blumau, Baden district, the comrades were also challenged by the rain. Here too, countless streets and some cellars were flooded.
damage in the millions
In eastern Austria, the hailstorms caused millions of euros in damage to agriculture: in Lower Austria, the violent thunderstorms left a trail of destruction from the Waldviertel to the eastern lowlands. Cereals, wine, orchards and agricultural pastures were badly affected. “Up to 4,000 hectares in the districts of Horn, Gänserndorf, Mistelbach and Wiener Neustadt are affected by the consequences of the storm. The damage here alone amounts to around 700,000 euros,” calculates Mario Winkler, spokesman for the Austrian hail insurance company. Agriculture was also hit hard in Styria and Burgenland.
