Despite the strong increase in green energy production worldwide, coal continues to play a very important role. According to an estimate by the International Energy Agency (IEA), global demand for coal will be higher this year than ever before.
This will therefore increase by one percent to 8.77 billion tons, as the IEA announced in Paris on Wednesday. After increasing by more than 1.2 billion tons since 2020, experts estimate that global coal demand will stagnate over the next three years and reach around 8.87 billion tons in 2027.
Given the current political climate and market trends, no reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from coal use is expected in 2027, mainly because progress on carbon sequestration is slow, the IEA said.
Differences between industrialized and emerging countries
There are still major differences in the development of coal demand between industrialized and emerging countries. While demand in the EU will fall by twelve percent this year and in the US by five percent, it will increase by one percent in China and by five percent in India. Indonesia and Vietnam are also mentioned in this context.
