Breathe a sigh of relief in what is arguably the most famous lagoon city: According to initial analyses, the shimmering green liquid in Venice’s famous Grand Canal is not dangerous. On Sunday, there were other assumptions in this regard.
Experts from the environmental protection agency Arpa Veneto, when reviewing samples, had determined that it is likely an organic coloring agent used in water inspections or caving, as Luca Zaia, president of the Veneto region, announced on Twitter on Monday. There is no risk of water pollution. However, Zaia criticized that Venice had become a “stage for actions”.
The green spot appeared in the water near the famous Rialto Bridge on Sunday morning. It could have been a protest from environmental activists – who had carried out actions in Italy several times in recent times in known locations – but initially no one acknowledged it.
