A tragic traffic accident took place in Vienna-Margareten on Sunday evening, with several seriously injured. A drug driver (38) caused the accident and there was a head-on collision with a moving tram.
Before the accident, two motorists were driving one behind the other in the middle lane towards Gumpendorfer Gurtel. Out of nowhere, the rear car hit the back of the lead car, causing it to skid. At the same time, the tram was traveling in the opposite direction. The driver of the car could not avoid the skid in time and collided head-on with the tram.
Five passengers slightly injured
Several people were seriously injured in the accident. The tram driver and five passengers suffered minor injuries. Among them were two girls aged three and eight. After the emergency medical care of the injured, everyone was taken to hospital. Significant damage was caused to all vehicles involved.
No valid driver’s license
In the hospital it was then determined that the 38-year-old driver of the rear car was under the influence of drugs and also did not have a valid driver’s license. A doctor at the hospital determined that he was unable to drive. A can of cannabis was also found in the vehicle involved in the accident.
The operation of the tram had to be interrupted for the duration of the operation. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
