The Greek police have arrested five of their own border police officers who are believed to be involved in a large smuggling ring. The five men, who worked closely with other members of the smuggling ring living in Turkey, failed to deter migrants from crossing the Evros border river from the neighboring country.
As the Ministry of Civil Defense in Athens announced on Monday, large sums of cash were seized from the apartments of border police officers. According to information, there are one officer and four non-commissioned officers.
256,000 crossed the border river in 2022
It was initially unclear how many migrants crossed the border into the EU. According to official figures, Greek border guards prevented some 256,000 migrants from crossing this border river last year.
