The bus carrying Hindu pilgrims slid off a bridge near the city of Jammu and then fell, Indian television channel NDTV reported, citing police. The vehicle was on its way to a shrine, it said. The cause of the accident was initially unclear.
Residents and authorities launched a rescue operation. According to the police, most of the victims came from the eastern Indian state of Bihar. They were on their way to the shrine of Vaishno Devi, one of the holiest temples in Hinduism near the city of Katra, visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year.
India has one of the highest road accident rates in the world. The country’s roads are among the most unsafe in the world. Every year, an average of 150,000 people die in traffic accidents there.
