The older generation fears for their mobility and raises the barricades. The draft for a new driving license directive in the EU continues to cause quite a stir in Austria!
As the “Krone” reported at length last week, there is one point in particular that upsets many older Austrians: compulsory driving tests or the time limit for the validity of a driver’s license from the age of 70.
In other words, from this age, all drivers in the EU must pass regular exams in order to continue driving. It is clear that the senior representatives are not very happy with the package.
There is resistance from the Austrian side. “If the date of birth determines fitness to drive instead of one’s own health, this is not a safety measure, but age discrimination,” says Ingrid Korosec, chairman of the Senior Association.
The head of the ÖVP delegation to the EU parliament, Angelika Winzig, is also critical: “The update of the directive is well-intentioned, but some points still need to be tightened.”
