As is known, chances make thieves: a 24-year-old Romanian intercepted several deliveries to a gun store. He then resold some of the stolen goods. Now he has been given a suspended prison sentence for embezzlement and data falsification – not definitively!
He just needed the money. Then he seized the opportunity and grabbed it. There were quite a few who offered themselves as parcel deliverers. So the thieving messenger specifically fished out alleged weapons shipments. The 24-year-old intercepted deliveries to a gunsmith in the Mostviertel (Lower Austria) eleven times between May and December of the previous year.
Goods resold
Even though the thief did not commit the major coup because the packages “only” contained expensive rifle scopes and binoculars, the stolen goods worth almost 70,000 euros were still picked up. “My parents had to repair the broken roof of their house in Romania. I wanted to support them with the money,” explains the defendant. He resold the stolen goods and threw some away out of fear. When his trail was discovered, the 24-year-old tried to suspect his colleagues, but the evidence was overwhelming. The suspect had confirmed with his name the acceptance of the package for delivery.
Repay 70,000 euros
The Romanian has now been sentenced by the court in St. Pölten to 15 months in prison for embezzlement and data falsification (he had issued digital delivery notes) – not legally binding. When and if he can pay for the damage remains the question. The arms dealer initially received compensation of 300 euros in cash.
