The Vienna University of Technology (TU) has stopped the plagiarism procedure for the graduation thesis of simulation researcher Niki Popper. The analysis using plagiarism software shows that the empirical, and therefore most of the thesis, is methodologically error-free, said Thursday. Based on these results, “the procedure will be stopped and the academic degree will not be revoked”.
The revocation of an academic degree presupposes an intent to deceive, which could not be established in Popper’s rendering of lung function from a medical work, it was said.
The dissertation process is still ongoing
The procedure for Popper’s dissertation has not yet been completed. This is still in the review process by external experts. “A result can be expected within a few months,” says Kurt Matyas, Vice Rector for Studies and Education.
The TU had initiated the procedure for checking the two works after allegations by the “plagiarism hunter” Stefan Weber in January. Even then, the university stated that “Dr. Popper’s honesty is beyond question”.
Popper himself circulated the decision on Twitter on Thursday, citing the passage “…clear recognition of independent work and originality, which would have warranted a very good review” from the report.
