Visit to Ukraine – Boris Johnson promises long-term aid to Kiev

Date:

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged long-term aid to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Johnson said in Kiev that Ukraine would gain the necessary “strategic stamina”. They will also work together to free Ukrainian grain, which is being held “hostage” by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy said he was happy to see “Ukraine’s great friend” back in Kiev.

Britain says it will soon supply Ukraine with several rocket launchers to help the country defend itself against Russia. On his second visit to the Ukrainian capital since the start of the Russian war of aggression, Johnson also made the offer of a British-led training mission that has the potential to be “critical to the conduct of the war”. According to government information, up to 10,000 soldiers should be trained within 120 days.

The UK has trained more than 22,000 people in Ukraine for the military since 2015. Since the beginning of the war, however, training has been taking place in neighboring countries. Johnson’s visit follows German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis to Kiev on Thursday.

Johnson, who is under great pressure domestically, will have to reckon with sensitive defeats in by-elections in two English constituencies in the coming week. An event with members of his Conservative party in the north east of England, near the Wakefield constituency, where the Tories are expected to lose, Johnson canceled on short notice due to the visit to Kiev.
