Sweden to NATO? – The Turkish parliament could vote on Tuesday

The Turkish parliament could vote on Sweden’s NATO membership on Tuesday. In any case, the vote is at the bottom of the agenda. There has been a tug-of-war over accession for more than a year and a half, including in Hungary.

The Swedish government had already applied for NATO membership together with Finland in May 2022. While the neighboring country was admitted to the alliance in April 2023, Sweden’s accession still requires the agreement of the Turkish and Hungarian governments (see video above).

Turkey is saying that Sweden is not showing enough commitment against ‘terrorist organizations’ such as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded modern American F-16 fighter jets in exchange for his yes. Erdogan and his governing partners have the majority in parliament. The sitting of Parliament starts at 3:00 PM (1:00 PM CET).

The Hungarian government is currently acting in parallel with Ankara’s actions. The blockade is justified there by criticism from the Swedish government about the rule of law and the situation of media freedom in Hungary. No vote on Sweden’s accession to NATO has yet been scheduled in parliament.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has now invited his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson to the negotiations in Budapest, as he announced on Platform X on Tuesday (see above). But he did not give a date.
