Supporters of the cleric storm the capital’s ‘Green Zone’ in protest at the nomination of Mohamed Shia al-Sudani as prime minister candidate

Hundreds of supporters of the cleric Muqtada al Sadr stormed the Iraqi parliament on Wednesday in protest against the nomination of Mohamed Shia al Sudani as prime minister by the Coordinating Framework Coalition.

As reported by the Kurdish television channel Rudaw, the protesters have broken down part of the concrete walls that demarcate the so-called ‘Green Zone’ of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, where most of the government buildings are located.

The pro-Iranian Coordinating Framework Bloc, which includes the Shia rule of law coalition led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, on Monday named Mohamed Shia al-Sudani as a candidate for the post of prime minister in a bid to change the country’s political landscape.

After the attack on the seat of parliament, Iraq’s Prime Minister Mostafá al Kazemi urged protesters to leave the place, while at the same time calling for calm and respect for “peace” and “public and private property” . .

The cleric Al Sadr has recently asserted himself as the country’s leading political force, demanding the resumption of talks to form a government, which has been stalled for months.

Sadr’s attempts to form a government have been thwarted by a coalition of pro-Iranian parties and militias with which the cleric refused to form an alliance in May.
