A winter of hunger, a failed revolution: this was the impression that Johann Nestroy wrote ‘Fear of Hell’ in 1849. The farce has many qualities that are appropriate today. Dominique Schnizer’s direction focuses on humor and does not give in to political relevance. The premiere in the Linz Schauspielhaus received much applause!
‘Fear of Hell’ is about the dismissal of the little people in bad times, in which superstition celebrates ‘fortunate origins’: one night the unemployed shoemaker’s son Wendelin meets a rich young gentleman who, under mysterious circumstances, gives him his cloak and a… .lot of money. Wendelin has only one explanation for this change in fortune: it must have been the devil!
