As every year in the cold season, the Vienna Caritas points out the cold telephone. However, because this is already overloaded, patience was requested during waiting times.
In the north of Austria it was down to minus 25 degrees today. Homeless people in particular suffer from the low temperatures, because they often have no way to stay warm and escape the bitter cold.
Aid organization Caritas reported on Monday that the cold telephone was completely overloaded and therefore appealed to the population: “We urgently ask passers-by who encounter an apparently homeless person outside to call the cold telephone (01-480-45-53)” , it says in a broadcast. However, because the telephones are already overloaded, patience was requested in case of waiting times.
No one should freeze
The rush to emergency shelters is currently enormous, Schwertner said. More homeless people than normal could be transferred directly from the street to warm emergency shelter this weekend or taken directly to accommodation by a cold bus, the director said.
How dangerous life on the streets now is is also evident from the fact that the “street work teams and also the rescue team have to treat the first homeless people with frostbite,” he wrote. He appealed to the Viennese to ensure that no one freezes to death. According to Geosphere Austria, temperatures as low as minus 13 degrees were measured in Vienna alone on Monday.
