The main Basque unions appreciate the drop in unemployment, but it has consequences for the insecurity of young people

Unemployment fell in November in the Basque Country by 1,493 people, 1.36% compared to October, where the number of unemployed stands at 108,152, the lowest figure in a November since 2008.

The main Basque unions (ELA, LAB, CCOO and UGT) assessed the decline in unemployment in November last year, but stressed that insecurity persists, especially among young people.

Unemployment fell in the Basque Country last month by 1,493 people, 1.36% compared to October, where the number of unemployed stands at 108,152, the lowest figure in a November since 2008.


According to data provided by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy on Monday, the Basque Country has 2,558 fewer unemployed people than in November 2022, with an annual decrease of 2.31%.

The majority union DE A has stressed in a statement that, despite the decline in the number of unemployed, three out of four contracts signed in November were temporary and more than half of the people registered for unemployment did not receive any benefits.

Faced with this scenario, ELA has opted for ‘organization and mobilization’ to end job insecurity and create dignified working conditions, both in the public and private sectors.

LABORATORYfor its part, has also highlighted in a note the decline in unemployment, but emphasizes that it is increasing among people under 25 years of age and among migrants, who are “used by the labor market according to their needs, and then” the groups considered be the first to be kicked out of their jobs.”

Employee committees (CCOO) has appreciated the decline in unemployment and, after recognizing the positive effects of the labor reform, believes that it is also showing “signs of exhaustion”. That is why she proposes new measures to increase “the quality” of the labor market, a minimum wage of up to 60% of the average salary and strengthening the social security system.

The central one UGT He has also emphasized the reduction of unemployment, but has maintained that the working conditions of young people need to be improved, especially salaries, and that a debate should be launched on the actual coverage of unemployment benefits.
