Their boat was wrecked in stormy seas, protective vests and cell phones were washed away by the high waves. Five fishermen off the coast of Malaysia had already died when they were accidentally spotted by a Coast Guard helicopter.
The accident happened last week near Selangor state. The sailors were surprised by a storm. For 16 hours the men had clung to a rock sticking out of the water and fought for their lives. Time and again, meters high waves crashed against the rocks.
When the victims saw the helicopter, they immediately made themselves known with hand signals. According to local media, the Coast Guard crew was on a training flight. “The weather was quite rough and the lives of the men were in danger,” the local coastguard chief told media. However, with the help of the lifeguards on board the helicopter, all stranded people were rescued.
