Cause of death unclear – bear carcass found in Trentino

Date:

A decomposing carcass of an adult bear has been found by forest rangers in the area of Mount Peller in Trentino. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, it was initially difficult to determine the cause of death. However, experts pointed out that the mating season is also accompanied by an increase in competition between animals, and collisions between conspecifics are not uncommon.

Samples have been collected and sent to a laboratory, the media reported on Friday. The hope was that this would provide information about the bear’s origin and cause of death.

Debate about killing problem bears
In Italy, since the death of a jogger from Trentino, the debate about the coexistence of bears and humans has come to a head. Many people protested the initial plans to kill “JJ4”, a supposed problem bear blamed for the jogger’s death and therefore captured. Animal rights activists are constantly calling for citizens to become more aware of wildlife or to set up wildlife corridors.

A court in Trento had suspended the provincial government’s shooting order for “JJ4” until June 27. It thus accepted the objections of various animal rights activists. The decision also includes an order to kill another problem bear, “MJ5”, which the county wants to be killed as well.

Animal rights activists doubt bear killed Jogger
“JJ4”, a sister of the problem bear Bruno killed in Bavaria in 2006, was caught and taken to a secure game reserve in the region. Animal rights activists issued a report in early May, according to which the jogger was not killed by “JJ4”, but by an adult male bear. This can be seen by the distance between the fangs in the bite marks.
