There is a strike in the room – mass protest of the Carinthian leisure educators

Date:

The 600 Carinthian leisure teachers fear a huge backlog: Children and parents can also be affected if many people from the professional group reorient themselves and turn their backs on their profession, the children are left behind without care, the union fears. A strike is in the air.

Stimulating the social, creative, artistic and sporting skills of children and young people and organizing free time in a meaningful way, for example in the whole day school, is one of the tasks of the 600 Carinthian leisure teachers and educators who work together with organizations such as the aid organization BÜM and Kindernest are active in almost all municipalities.

But now the union has passed a bill that would mean huge disadvantages. A higher entry threshold is planned: the Matura. “But a third of the employees don’t have one. They run the risk of becoming unemployed,” says Petra Markut, BÜM.

Less training is planned – instead of 60 ECTS points in the course, only 30. This results in a huge salary cut for the future “assistant pedagogues”. “We are talking about a minus of a maximum of 19 percent,” says Dunja Abuja of Kindernest.

open questions
“Many questions about maternity leave, severance pay, vacation are also open,” said Ralph Sternjak of the GPA. “If some people reorient themselves professionally for fear of the change, the staff shortage will only get bigger. We are fighting it. The strike permit has been obtained!”

“We need to bring the bill down!”
“The current system has been working perfectly in Carinthia for more than ten years. Why change? Why raise the entry barrier, degrade education, burden school management with more organization and deprive mayors as representatives of the school providers a say? We have to bring down the bill,” emphasizes Horst Krainz of the aid organization.

“We were not involved, although we could contribute a lot from the field,” say Claudia Untermoser, Kindernest, and Andrea Gröblacher-Sullbauer, BÜM.

The battle against the approaching end of recreational education has begun.
