Officers from the Vienna-Donaustadt city police command became aware of a scuffle between four people on Saturday. A 17-year-old boy had previously tried to steal a man’s wallet. However, he noticed the attempted theft and confronted the youth.
“After an initial clarification of the facts, it was determined that a 17-year-old Austrian involved had previously tried to steal the wallet of a 20-year-old man. After the victim did not let go, the suspect allegedly hit him,” said a press release from the Vienna police.
An uninvolved third party then rushed to help the victim. The victim suffered abrasions to his hand as a result of the incident.
The suspect fled
After the officers arrived, the young suspect fled, but was stopped by the officers after a few meters and temporarily detained. An immediate search for a suspected second perpetrator was negative.
The suspect is said to be free on the orders of the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office. Further investigation will be carried out by the Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department, North Division.
