Mother’s milk is the best food for a newborn – it is well known. But hardly anyone knows that surplus milk has been collected and processed in Vienna for about 100 years. The donations are distributed to needy babies – often premature babies – and their parents.
Louisa P. gave birth to her daughter on November 11 last year. But her great happiness was clouded on the second day: the girl had jaundice, was too weak to drink enough and lost weight extremely quickly. “The doctors finally told me she was dehydrated and we definitely needed to give her something,” the young mother recalls. Because breastfeeding is exhausting for such small children – and many women don’t get milk so soon after giving birth.
