The World Health Organization (WHO) plans to use the digital proof of vaccination or recovery developed during the corona pandemic as the basis for a global certification network. This network aims to facilitate travel during future pandemics and better protect citizens.
These proofs will be officially introduced in July 2021. The first step is to ensure that current EU digital certificates continue to work.
The digital certificate allowed EU citizens to prove their vaccinations, tests and recovery across Europe using a QR code. This simplified many leisure activities during the pandemic, from summer vacations to smaller trips to neighboring countries. For example, the proof was needed to gain access to events or to avoid quarantine after arriving in another country.
The collaboration will also set standards for checking digital signatures to prevent fraud. It is emphasized that the WHO will not have access to the underlying personal data.
