Slipped – broken leg! A pensioner lay on the five-metre-high balcony of her home in Mattersburg, Burgenland, for hours, in sub-zero temperatures and snow showers, until her cries for help were heard. The search was difficult. Brave police officers were able to save the woman and save her from death.
A single retiree from Mattersburg had to endure excruciating pain in the freezing cold this weekend. At lunch she went to the balcony of her parents’ home to feed her beloved cats. However, in the current sub-zero temperatures, the floor was slippery and the 90-year-old slipped, fell and broke her leg.
Painful minutes turned into hours
The seriously injured woman could barely move. In terrible pain she screamed for help, but her screams were not heard in the snowstorm. The pensioner endured her seemingly hopeless situation full of fear. Minutes turned into painful hours for her. The 90-year-old soon started shaking from the cold. Her cries for help became quieter, but she did not give up.
Finally the neighbor raised the alarm
It wasn’t until the afternoon that a resident could hear the pleas. The earwitness raised the alarm via an emergency call, but could not say where the screams came from. In the middle of Mattersburg, two police officers immediately started looking for the initially unknown woman in distress. Shortly afterwards they were supported by colleagues from another patrol.
The resident was injured on the balcony
“After about 20 minutes we could hear the very quiet calls, but they were difficult to locate,” police said. As the clues finally became more concrete, the uniformed officers opened the gate of a single-family home. They found the seriously injured person in the courtyard: “The resident was lying on her balcony on the ground at a height of five meters.”
Paramedics helped
Because the security door at the entrance to the house could not be opened, a police officer stopped by commercial vehicles so he could borrow a ladder. But only the notified fire brigade could bring the urgently needed climbing equipment. Two officers – one of whom trained at the police medical service – rescued the woman and provided first aid until the emergency doctor took over the operation.
Chilblains and broken femur
Four hours after her fall, the patient was admitted to Eisenstadt Hospital. She was severely hypothermic, had already had her first chilblains and had a broken femur! “Your rescue borders on a Christmas miracle. Without an earwitness and police intervention, the woman would not have survived. “Everyone really deserves an award,” is the praise.
