The six hospitals issued a joint warning to people to refrain from emergency departments other than “life-threatening and real-life situations” after an increasing number of patients waited until 12:00 pm. The Trust Hospital in West Yorkshire and Harrogate in North Yorkshire – an area of more than 2.5 million people – said the current pressure left them with no choice but to treat patients with acute illness or injury.
The West Yorkshire Acute Trust Association (WYAAT) said data from its newest ambulance division showed a 14.2% increase in attendance compared to the same week last year. It’s really important that people only go to the emergency room if they really need to, said Dr Andrew Locke, an emergency medical consultant at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.
“Our hospitals are very busy and people have waited a long time to see them.” In the past two weeks we have faced enormous challenges due to the sharp increase in the number of people present in the event of an accident or emergency. This puts additional pressure on our teams responsible for treating patients with serious and life-threatening conditions.
“If you are sick and not sure what health service you need, call NHS 111. A highly trained clinical advisor will refer you to the most appropriate service.”
