Standard browser trick – How Microsoft forces us to use its apps

Date:

Eleven years ago, the American software company Microsoft imposed one of the highest competition fines to date in the EU: the company had to pay 561 million euros because it had abused its Internet Explorer browser compared to the competition. The punishment had no deterrent effect. Microsoft still uses its dominance to market its apps and services. We show you the latest example – and how they outsmart the Windows manufacturer.

Microsoft is one of the internet ‘gatekeepers’ for the EU and the new Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations, alongside other IT giants such as Meta and ByteDance from the US and China. With their enormous market power, virtually unlimited financial resources to acquire competitors and monopolies like Windows has built up in PC operating systems, they have all the tools to keep competition small and customers dependent on their own services. Microsoft shows with the example of a new Windows update that ‘Big Tech’ continues to make use of this power. It not only drives users crazy, but also providers of competing software. Removal is not a piece of cake.
