Eight kilometers southwest of Leoben in Upper Styria, a strong earthquake struck late Monday evening, just before midnight. The tremors measured at 11:40 PM reached a magnitude of 3.6, as reported by the Austrian seismological service (GeoSphere Austria).
The epicenter of the earthquake at a depth of eight kilometers was near St. Michael in Upper Styria. It was strongly felt by the population in this area, the statement said. The tremors were clearly visible in large parts of Styria.
According to the Seismological Service, earthquakes of this magnitude can cause minor damage, such as cracks in the plaster.
