The Kajovka Dam, in the south of the country, has been partially destroyed, prompting the emergency evacuation of the area’s residents to begin. Kiev has convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council.
Ukraine and Russia have mutually accused to destroy the prey of the hydroelectric power station Kakhovka, on the Dnieper River, 60 kilometers from the city of Kherson (south of the country), which is beginning to flood the region’s surroundings. Thus, the evacuation of the residents of the area began.
The Southern Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine It has denounced the Kremlin’s destruction of infrastructure — Russia has controlled infrastructure since the beginning of the invasion — and said it is investigating the extent of the damage, as well as the rate and amount of water entering the likely flood zones.
“The Russian army has committed another terrorist attack. They blew up the Central Kakhovka hydroelectric power station,” said the head of the military administration of Kherson province, Oleksandr Prokudin, in a video addressed to the area’s population.
The mayor of the occupied New Kajovka (it is in Russian hands), Vladimir Leontiev, for his part, confirmed nocturnal attacks to headquarters by the troops Ukrainian, which is said to have destroyed the valves so that “the water from the reservoir began to flow uncontrollably down the river”. Minutes earlier, Moscow reported that the dam had collapsed “due to damage”, denying the attacks as the cause of the dam’s destruction, according to Russia’s TASS agency.
Leontiev has stated that local authorities are working on “the worst consequences”, though he has pointed out that water levels have risen, but “so far there is no need to evacuate civilians”. The water is expected to reach its maximum level within five hours. Likewise, it has denounced that this is “a very serious act of terrorism”, and therefore “they will study the consequences”.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenski, has convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council of Ukraine in connection with the dam explosion, Ukrainian Security Service Secretary Oleksiy Danilov said.
It has also warned that this incident poses a threat to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. For this reason, he stressed that today “people’s safety is a priority”.
Zelensky months ago accused Russian forces of laying mines at the facility with the intention of causing catastrophic flooding in nearby communities to slow down the advance of Kiev troops.
For their part, the Russian emergency services have also denounced the Ukrainian missile attacks on the dam, although they did not cause any serious damage.
