“We women also take care of our partners and don’t kill them,” explains women’s rights activist Maria Rösslhumer. Trivializing femicides with the words “nurse murder” or “relationship” is fatal. This year there have already been 15 femicides – and 24 failed attempts to kill women. “We have such a strong patriarchal culture in Austria and many men with toxic behavior.” This image also radiates beyond our borders – and attracts men with a similar attitude…
A new study from the Institute for Conflict Research finds that murderers of women with foreign passports are significantly overrepresented in Austria. Rösslhumer would “firmly” deny that the disdain for women was caused by migration: “It doesn’t depend on the foreigners”, but on a misperception of masculinity in Austria, Rösslhumer told moderator Conny Winiwarter. Latest case: a femicide in Styria.
Every third young man is violent
Can you shake hands during a fight? Every third young man answers this question with ‘yes’. For the director of the Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters, it is mainly the men “who have to work on themselves”. “We need men as our allies,” Rösslhumer pleaded.
As a positive example, the women’s rights activist emphasizes the campaign of the Ministry of Social Affairs. It’s not about how far women should adjust their behavior (which they don’t have to!), but how men should behave.
What men finally need to understand…
The way in which the police and judiciary deal with the problem is also problematic. Because what we clearly lag behind in Austria are the risk assessments. Because each organization uses a different instrument for this, the judiciary does not use any at all, according to Rösslhumer. She says to those men who present themselves as victims and are afraid that they are now ‘not allowed to say or do anything’: “Men must finally understand that they cannot humiliate women!”
