“As big as mangoes” – Giant hail devastates holiday region in Italy

Date:

The series of storms in Italy continues. Severe storms once again swept over the popular holiday destination, as the intense heat favored massive thunderstorms and hailstorms. Numerous cars and buildings were destroyed. There were also some injuries.

Extreme weather events have hit northern and central Italy in recent weeks, causing chaos, massive damage and even fatalities.

The recordings show the situation on Monday in the municipality of Roveredo in the Italian region of Friuli. Shortly before midnight on Monday, a violent hailstorm raged in the town, which is only 30 kilometers from the popular holiday resort of Lignano, causing massive destruction. However, the storm soon subsided and on Tuesday it was sunny again in the holiday region.

“Hailstones as Big as Mangoes”
An extreme supercell caused enormous hailstorms in this region, sometimes up to four centimeters in diameter. The portal Extremwetter.tv reports of “hailstones as big as mangoes”. These extreme thunderstorms are favored by the current sweltering heat in Italy and the Mediterranean. In increasingly severe storms, the warm air is released because it can no longer absorb moisture.

Southern Italy is on fire
While fierce storms rage in northern Italy, the south is ravaged by fierce fires. In Sicily, for example, a huge forest fire paralyzed air traffic in Palermo for several hours. Firefighters deployed helicopters and firefighting aircraft to bring the flames under control. The conflagration also threatened the Cevello Hospital and some transportation routes.

As a result of the series of major fires, the mayor of Catania, Enrico Trantino, called on people not to come to the airport “due to foreseeable serious traffic disruptions”. In the middle of the main travel season, this leads to serious restrictions in flight operations.
