Since 2019, the number of carnivores and sightings in Tyrol has increased enormously. This year is no exception. 54 cases have been registered so far, almost double the number from the previous year.
After the bear sighting last Thursday in St. Anton, hunters in the area in question have intensified their investigation. But they couldn’t find any other clues. The sighting is therefore not listed in the state’s reporting portal. Because only events proven by photos and traces are listed here.
Country calls for reporting sightings
Reports of sightings are circulating on news channels on the Internet, recently a wolf is said to have been seen on the Patscherkofel. The Land of Tyrol calls on you to report any sightings as soon as possible via the form on the Land’s website.
Image or video material is crucial
“Authorities are closely monitoring all information to assess potential risks to the population and assess whether action should be taken,” says LHStv. Joseph Geisler on that. Images are important for the professional assessment. The competent authority cannot find out how many reports of sightings are received without visual material. The fact is: there are also strange reports, for example about a “young, unaccompanied baby bear” on Gugger Island near Hall – in all likelihood a beaver. Or an alleged bear in Birgitz, who was a life-sized model in an archery range.
Large carnivores are not always responsible
Cases in which the origin of a crack is unclear are also clarified. In retrospect, it often turns out that no large carnivore was responsible for the damage to livestock. In 2022 this was the case 31 times and this year 4 times.
As of May 29, 2023, 54 large carnivores were detected in Tyrol according to official state figures. For comparison, there were 29 in the same period of 2022. In the previous year, 19 different wolf individuals were identified through DNA and three different bears in Tyrol.
In a press conference on Tuesday, the Weidezone association demands more decisiveness!
