19 months after the cable car accident at Lake Maggiore, in which the six-year-old boy of Israeli descent named Eitan was the only one able to save himself, his grandfather was sentenced in Italy to a suspended prison sentence of one year and eight months. The Israeli was charged with child abduction. An accomplice of the man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, Italian media reported Thursday.
Eitan B. (7) is the only survivor of the cable car accident on Lake Maggiore in May 2021. His grandfather and his accomplice were accused of serious child abduction in Italy. The case concerns the kidnapping of the boy in September 2021.
Grandfather disagrees with custody
On September 11, 2021, the grandfather and his driver took Eitan, then six years old, from the domicile near Pavia, Lombardy, designated by the Italian judicial authorities, and deprived him of his paternal aunt’s guardian to take him to Israel, the homeland of his return parents. The aunt, who lives in Italy, was appointed guardian of the child by a judge in Turin after his parents and brother died in the cable car accident. The grandfather disagreed with this decision because he wanted Eitan to grow up in Israel. That’s why he organized the kidnapping of the boy.
The grandfather and the driver took the child to a private plane in Lugano and took Eitan to Israel. After a lengthy court case in Tel Aviv, Israeli judges ordered the child’s return to Italy. Now he lives with his aunt’s family near the Lombard city of Pavia. Eitan’s parents, great-grandparents and one of his brothers died in the cable car accident. A total of 14 people died in the accident.
