Despite holding position 323 in the world ranking, Valimaki offered an exhibition at the start of the tournament. He made ten birdies (five in the first nine holes and five more in the second) and did not make a single bogey. He was especially successful with the putt because most birdies were making relatively long putts.
Two shots behind the Finn is the South African Oliver Becker, who made eight birdies; French is three Pierre Pineauwho made the same eight birdies but made one bogey.
The man from Madrid Alexander the Kingworld amateur champion last year, and the Asturian Alfredo Garcia Heredia share eighth place after covering the first round in 68 strokes, four under par, while Santiago Tarrio then there are 70 and Alejandro Cañizares and Manuel Elvira there is one more.
This Mauritius Open is the last tournament of 2022, but it counts towards the 2023 European Tour.
