Travelers at London’s Heathrow Airport are facing a tough summer: union Unite announced on Wednesday that airport security staff will strike for 31 days in the summer months of July and August. The workers demand a wage increase. More than 2,000 guards at Terminals 3 and 5 plan to walk out.
The strikes are planned for the period between June 24 and August 27, for a total of 31 strike days. These fall in a busy travel period, in which, in addition to the holidays, there is also a long weekend and the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice from the end of June to the beginning of July.
More strikes are imminent
The union warned of “flight delays, disruptions and cancellations” as a result of the strikes. She called on employers to offer security staff at Heathrow airport a “fair” wage. If this does not happen, further strikes will follow.
The UK has been hit by a wave of strikes in sectors such as rail, post, education and healthcare over the past year. The reason for this is high inflation, which is eroding real wages and the purchasing power of the British people.
Although inflation fell in April, it remained high at 8.7 percent. Food prices in particular rose sharply.
