Anna Riha accepted the congratulations with a smile on her face: she celebrated her 106th birthday, making her the oldest inhabitant of Linz!
In 1917 Upper Austria looked very different. In Bad Ischl there were riots due to food shortages, the country introduced meatless days, the Steyr weapons factory stopped working – and Anna Riha was born in Linz.
Today, at 106, she is the capital’s oldest resident. On Wednesday, the cheerful senior celebrated her birthday in the Sonnenhof Lenaupark.

Anna Riha was born in Kaplitz and moved to Linz at a young age. She worked for the magistrate and had to raise her two children alone after the early death of her husband.
Mayor Klaus Luger and Deputy Karin Hörzing were among the benefactors of the birthday child: “Ms. Riha can look back with pride on a long and eventful life. She and her generation lived through the most tragic times in Austrian history. At the same time, it was people like Anna Riha who rebuilt Austria from the rubble.”
