Shocking accident in Seongnam, South Korea: Dozens of early commuters were on the escalator going up Sunae subway station when it suddenly went haywire. The escalator suddenly changes direction and people fall down. The incident was filmed by a security camera (see video above).
Some people fell over the railing of the escalator, others were crushed under the avalanche of people. Fourteen people were injured. Eleven were slightly injured and were sent home after first aid.
Three others were taken to hospital with back and leg injuries. None of the injuries were life-threatening, local media reported.
malfunction suspected
Immediately after the incident, the authorities closed the escalator to Exit 2 of the metro station. The police investigated the circumstances of the accident, but ruled out third-party blame. She stated that the escalator was unlikely to have been “turned manually” and suspected a malfunction.
