An elevated section of busy highway I-95 collapsed on Sunday in the US city of Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Fire Department said the cause was a fire in the underpass under this short stretch of highway.
The fire service suspects that a vehicle, possibly a tanker, caught fire in the underpass. Firefighters are still trying to extinguish the fire. Initially nothing was known about injuries.
“Emergency services are expected to be a long time dealing with the collapse and fire,” the director of the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management told CNN.
“The Job Is Gone”
And added: “Today is going to be a long day.” The highway is no longer passable to the north, and its suitability in the opposite direction is also questionable. “The road is gone,” said the director.
I-95 is an important thoroughfare on the east coast of the US, connecting major cities such as Miami, Washington, Philadelphia and New York. The great north-south axis extends from the southern state of Florida to near the northern border between the US and Canada.
