Last night’s heavy winds claimed the first fatality. In Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria) a falling tree brought down a high stand on which a fighter was standing. He was fatally injured.
The storm ‘Zoltan’ has kept fire brigades in large parts of Austria on their toes in recent hours. There were also numerous missions in Lower Austria.
All help came too late
Now the first fatal accident has been reported. In Klosterneuburg, the storm caused a tree to fall on a high stand around 1 a.m. and a hunter was swept away. The emergency services freed the elderly man, but all help came too late for him. The hunter had hunted wild boar.
Countless missions
Due to the hurricane-like wind gusts and their consequences, numerous rescue workers were also deployed in other states. For example, in the Vöcklabruck district (Upper Austria), a vehicle got stuck in fallen trees. All occupants were able to escape unharmed.
The night in Vorarlberg was relatively quiet. The Rescue and Fire Control Center (RFL) recorded only seven operations due to the gale force winds. Strong gusts of wind caused trees and branches to fall and the fire brigade had to clear the roads. The RFL said Friday morning that no major damage or even personal injury was caused.
