Terrible accidents – after a train fire: our tunnels are so dangerous

Date:

With 151 passengers keeping their nerves in the smoke-filled tunnel and 700 emergency services responding very well, anxious hours for a car train in Tyrol ended with a deep sigh of relief (see video above). The mission evokes memories of the terrible tunnel accidents in Austria in recent years.

Dozens of people have died in the Austrian tunnel in recent years. Most accidents happened due to carelessness.

Timeline of the most terrible tunneling accidents in Austria:

  • April 10, 1995: A massive collision caused a fire in the Pfänder tunnel. Three people died.
  • 29. May 1999: A truck loaded with paint caught fire in the Tauern tunnel. The inferno claimed the lives of 12 people.
  • November 11, 2000: A heater has set fire to hydraulic oil in the Kaprun Gletscherbahn. Only 12 people survived the disaster, 155 died. It is Austria’s largest tunnel disaster.
  • April 12, 2001: A pile-up in the Helbersberg tunnel left 2 dead and 10 injured.
  • 6. August 2001: After a minivan collided with a car, a fire started in the Gleinalm tunnel, in which five people died of their serious injuries.
  • 8. August 2001: Three people died in the Amberg tunnel after a small truck collided with a coach.
  • August 31, 2001: A collision between two vehicles claims two lives in the Lainberg tunnel.
  • August 17, 2005: A person is killed in the Roppener tunnel because a bus collided with a car.

How can you protect yourself against this?
But how can those trapped in the inferno protect themselves and save themselves from potentially deadly danger? First and foremost measure – keep calm and don’t resort to headless flight! In the first place, travelers must follow the instructions of the trained train personnel and only leave the wagons quickly after the green light via marked escape and rescue routes.
