Three deer flee – storm destroys zoo: “Everything is under water!”

Date:

For the second time in just a few years, Helmut and Claudia Hirschmann’s privately owned, lovingly run zoo in Styria’s Jagerberg was completely engulfed by the storm. Fences were broken down, causing three deer to run away in a panic. Despair is great because of the devastation. But the family does not want to give up!

Not again! On Friday afternoon, Styria was again hit by violent storms with heavy rain and hail. The greater Gnas area was particularly affected, where the districts of Thien and Kohlberg were flooded up to a meter. 28 fire brigades were constantly on the job, they even had to secure washed away silo bales. Dozens of cellars, streets and fields were flooded and in some places the ground was covered with hail of up to 20 centimeters.

Helmut Hirschmann from Jagerberg in southeastern Styria was hit hard for the second time in just four years. He and his wife Claudia run their own animal park, where they care for ducks, chickens, fallow deer, turtles, fish and other animals. School classes, families and tourists keep coming to learn more about nature from the devoted couple.

On Friday, however, a catastrophe broke out over the idyll with the heavy rainfall: “Everything is under water, the fences have been broken down. The chicken coop was three-quarters of a meter under water. Fortunately, the animals were smart enough to climb higher. However, three deer passed by,” says Hirschmann. He hopes to find her soon. When two deer ran away last year, he got them back shot after a short time.

After the heavy rains of recent times, not a stone was left on another. The green areas have given way to muddy ground, the ponds are also flooded. Now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start over. “Sometimes you want to hit your hat,” Hirschmann is disappointed. But he doesn’t want to lose heart. It will take a while before the meadows grow back. But also in the future, people should be given the opportunity to “Dr. Dolittle”, as he is affectionately called, to experience the love for animals and nature, that’s for sure. “The reconstruction will take a while, but we can do it”, Claudia Hirschmann is confident.

Great team spirit in the city
The Hirschmanns are incredibly grateful to their village community during this difficult time: “The people are a sensation, they help us where they can with tractors and shovels. We look ahead. The sun always rises, even if there are stones in the way”, they take new courage.
