A hospital near Paris fell victim to a cyber attack and had to turn away emergency patients on Monday evening. The attack temporarily prevented access to the hospital’s software and patient admissions information system. As the hospital announced, the attackers are demanding a ransom of ten million dollars (equivalent to 10.07 million euros).
Due to the technical difficulties, the clinic’s IT experts initially assumed a malfunction. “But when there was a $10 million ransom demand, they understood that,” hospital director Gilles Calmes said Monday. The cyber attack temporarily prevented access to the hospital’s software and patient admissions information system.
forwarded to emergency patients
Since Sunday, the clinic has made every effort to treat particularly urgent cases, but emergencies should have been referred to other facilities in the region, Calmes said. This is because re-recording after the cyber-attack is complicated. Cancellations of operations are also still to be feared.
The clinic in Corbeil-Essonnes, about 30 kilometers southeast of Paris, has about 1,000 beds and provides healthcare to nearly 600,000 people. It was initially unclear whether one perpetrator or more people were behind the attack on Sunday evening. The Paris prosecutor’s office is investigating.
