Church in War Service – Russia: faith incompatible with pacifism

Date:

It is no secret that the Russian Orthodox Church is part of the Kremlin’s propaganda machine and supports the ruthless offensive war in Ukraine. But now the Moscow ecclesiastical court is also turning against pacifism with insane distortions, violating the fifth commandment.

The war was provoked by outside forces to weaken Russia, the Moscow patriarch and presumed former KGB agent Kirill repeatedly insists in his prayers – thus dutifully participating in the Kremlin’s brainwashing. However, not all priests allow themselves to be exploited in this way. One of them is former journalist and philosopher Ioann Burdin from the Russian city of Kostroma.

He was banned from work and fined for his war-critical sermons. On June 16, the ecclesiastical court must definitively remove him from office, reports the independent Russian news portal Mediazona.

Don’t label the bad as the good
“We Christians cannot look away when a brother kills a brother. We cannot close our eyes in shame and call what is black, white and what is bad good,” Father Burdin had posted on his church’s website, causing huge problems with the diocese.

Burdin was a “conceited pseudo-pacifist,” was the reply. For the pacifism with which the priest tries to hide behind the accusations against him is not compatible with the actual doctrine of the faith.

Violation of the Fifth Commandment
The priest countered that one could not simply break the fifth commandment (“Thou shalt not kill”). This is also the reasoning of the Ukrainian National Council regarding the Russian invasion. “For me, it’s like walking into our church, grabbing a stick, hitting someone on the head, grabbing a knife, and stabbing everyone who’s praying in the church. Just because there’s something I don’t like about him.” Burdin tried to summarize the nature of the current Russian state.
