A 20-year-old woman from Zillertal has recently become the only woman in the driver’s cabin of the Achenseebahn in the Tyrolean lowlands. Editor Nicole Greiderer accompanied Jacqueline Lechner on one of her first trips as a steam locomotive engineer.
Although there are 114 years between them, Jacqueline Lechner and steam engine “Hannah” make a good team. Even if Jacqueline has not held sway for long: The 20-year-old has been working for the Achenseebahn since August 2022 – actually in the office and at the cash register. “In the autumn I became interested in the locomotives, how it all works. My colleagues showed me that and then I passed the exams”, the carpenter looks back on the past year.
