After the serious bus accident with ten dead wedding guests in Australia, the driver was released on bail on Tuesday. The 58-year-old had to deposit 10,000 Australian dollars (about 6,300 euros) and was not allowed to leave his apartment at night. He also had to surrender his driver’s license.
The bus driver is charged with dangerous driving resulting in death and negligence. After an initial investigation, the police accuse him of speeding in dense fog. Of the 25 injured, 14 are still in hospital, one of them is life-threatening. It was Australia’s worst bus crash in nearly 30 years.
tears in the courtroom
The driver burst into tears during the hearing, local media reported. The judge did not agree with the public prosecutor’s objection that there was a danger of going into hiding. The man himself was traumatized by the accident and came from the same region as many of the victims. Therefore, his release on bail was ordered. The next hearing is scheduled for August 9.
No drugs involved, but dangerous driving style
According to the police, the accident happened late Sunday evening (local time) near the town of Greta in the state of New South Wales, about 150 kilometers north of Sydney. On the way back from the wedding party at a winery, the bus suddenly fell sideways onto a guardrail at a roundabout. The bus driver, who was only slightly injured, was temporarily arrested and questioned. An alcohol and drug test had revealed no abnormal values. However, survivors reported a dangerous driving style. Shortly before the accident, the man would have asked the passengers to put on their seat belts.
