A bear was spotted Tuesday morning in a well-known tourist resort on Lake Garda in Trentino, Italy. The animal ran in the middle of the street through the center of Arco. According to reports, the bear may have migrated down Mount Stivo to the valley. A resident of the town described the bear as being frightened and likely looking for an escape route.
Arco Mayor Alessandro Betta said he had received dozens of calls from concerned citizens. Forest rangers from the province of Trento said the animal was a “stray and unsafe animal”.
Again and again encounters with bears
Recently there have been encounters between humans and bears in Trentino. In April, a 26-year-old jogger was fatally attacked by a problem bear in the woods of Caldes in Val di Sole.
Last weekend, a family from Cavizzana also saw two bears in their garden. In the Val di Sole, bears are spotted time and time again, even near rubbish containers.
After the death of the jogger in Trentino, the debate about the coexistence of bears and humans in Italy has intensified. Animal rights activists regularly call for people to become more aware of wildlife or to set up wildlife corridors.
