The mayor of one of Mexico’s most dangerous cities moves to a military barracks for security reasons. The premier of the northwestern city of Tijuana on the US border, Montserrat Caballero, is under threat from crime syndicates and is therefore under protection, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Tuesday.
The 40-year-old politician from the ruling Morena party has been in office for less than two years. She had announced on Monday that she would move to the barracks next week.
Violent drug cartels
Violent drug cartels have been operating in the city for decades. The governor of the state of Baja California, in which Tijuana is located, and her predecessor were also threatened, López Obrador said. Further details were not initially available.
Tijuana borders the California city of San Diego and is the fifth most dangerous metropolis in the world, according to the Mexican non-governmental organization Citizens’ Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice. According to this, more than 2,100 people were killed in 2022 with almost two million inhabitants.
