The Ukrainian government apparently wants to depose its commander-in-chief, General Valery Zalushny, and has informed the US presidential office about these plans, according to insiders.
“The White House has indicated that it is up to Ukraine to make its own sovereign decisions about its personnel,” one of the insiders revealed. An official statement from the White House is not yet available.
Differences in strategic issues and military offensives
Zalushnyj had apparently clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over military strategy and other issues. Moreover, the move would follow last year’s failed Ukrainian counter-offensive, which failed to recapture significant parts of Russia-held territory.
One of the insiders explained that Zelensky and the general had disagreed over a new military mobilization offensive, with the president having rejected Zalushny’s proposal to call up 500,000 new soldiers. “For now, the status quo will remain in place until further notice,” the insider said.
Criticism of the government expressed
Saluzhnyy had previously published a column on the website of the American news channel CNN on Thursday in which he wrote that the Ukrainian government had failed to mobilize sufficient troops. According to reports in Western and Ukrainian media, Saluzhny rejected Zelensky’s request to resign this week.
