change naturally? – Pistorius: German tanks not dependent on US

Date:

Defense ministers and senior military officials from many of Ukraine’s allies are currently discussing further support for Ukraine in defending against Russia’s war of aggression at US Ramstein Air Base in Germany. A final decision is expected, especially on the main battle tank issue. But even before the summit, the government in Berlin softened its previously difficult stance.

Contrary to the previous argument of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to which the supply of German Leopard-2 main battle tanks depended on the supply of American Abrams main battle tanks and that they did not want to go it alone, the newly appointed Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius presented himself clearly on Thursday evening at the TV channel ARD: “I don’t know such a link.”

Poland had previously stressed that it would move the Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, even without Germany’s permission as the country where the tanks were manufactured. His country is ready for such non-standard measures, Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski told private radio station RMF FM. When asked if Poland would resist German resistance, he replied: “I think that if there is strong resistance, we will be ready to take even such unusual measures … but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

Washington: “Germans understand what is at stake”
In the debate on the supply of main battle tanks to Ukraine, the US government demonstratively supported Germany. When asked why Germany was hesitant to approve battle tanks, National Security Council communications director John Kirby said on U.S. television (local time) on Thursday night: “The Germans understand very well what is at stake in Ukraine.”

Germany is one of the “largest donors” and has continuously increased its support. “We’re thankful for what they’ve delivered and we’re thankful they’re considering providing main battle tanks — we’ll see what comes of that,” Kirby said. Germany makes sovereign decisions, adapted to the country’s needs.

Kiev wants ‘tank coalition’
Die Ukraine is hoping for promises of massive additional military aid from its supporters’ rally in Ramstein, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk. “The Ukrainians expects from the Ramstein summit a real breakthrough in the provision of state-of-the-art weapon systems,” says the former Ukrainian Ambassador in Berlin to the editorial network Germany (RND). “The biggest request to the (German) traffic light government for the Ramstein meeting would be that Germany not only end its strange blockade of the Leopard tanks, but show real leadership and build a powerful coalition of tanks for the Ukraine The photo.”
