Alcohol, drugs, rubbish, fights: the “Billa-Eck” in the heart of the capital has been bubbling up for years. Resident entrepreneurs – and the inhabitants of Graz – wait in vain for a solution from politicians. Now the situation seems to be spiraling out of control: “They are clearly acting on our doorstep, peeing everywhere and there are always loud fights,” an afflicted restaurateur said in Graz town hall on Wednesday. ÖVP city councilor Kurt Hohensinner had invited entrepreneurs to a roundtable and wants to make another attempt to address the grievances.

“The problem has been around for years, but since this year it has become extreme,” says Hohensinner. At the council meeting on Thursday, the ÖVP will therefore bring the matter up for discussion with an urgent request. Specifically, there are three points: First, the guard’s presence must be strengthened. In addition, Mayor Elke Kahr (KPÖ) is asked to develop a concept with all political groups and the police to get the situation under control. And: CCTV in the affected area must be controlled – but that falls within the area of responsibility of the federal government.
However, Billa’s branch has been taking its own measures for some time and sometimes employs a security service. Among other things, because there are always drug deals in the store.
